It's of Meat.
You need 500 grams of beef or venison.
You need of Vegetables.
You need 1 kg of potatoes.
Prepare 500 grams of onions.
You need 125 grams of butter.
You need 1 cup of vinegar.
You need of worcestershiresauce.
It's of breadcrumbs.
It's of applesauce.
You need of Spices.
It's 2 of bayleaves.
Prepare 4 of whole cloves.
Prepare 5 of squashed juniper berries.
It's 1 pinch of salt.
It's 5 of crushed peppercorns.

Chop onion and carrots and slice garlic. Heat oil in a heavy skillet. Brown meat and spoon out into pie dish. Place in hot oven for a few minutes to set; then fill casserole with stew and cover with layer of mashed potatoes and brown in hot oven.

Cook the meat: first brown on both sides, then add some water and the cup of vinegar together with the spices..
After an hour of slow cooking add the onions. Leave it all stewing for an additional hour..
Boil the potatoes well and mash them. Take the meat from the pan, cut it in small pieces and mash it with the potatoes. Add the onions and meat juice until it can stirred with ease. If necessary add some butter or milk, but this is often not necessary. Season when necessary with additional salt and/or Worcestershire sauce..
Preheat the oven to 200C. Put the dish in an oven tray and cover it with breadcrumbs, add a few lumps of butter on top. Put it all in the oven until you get a golden brown crust.
Serve the dish with some applesauce on the side.
